Press Release - Burglary and Menacing

On January 8, 2018 at around 11:30 pm members of the Schodack Police Department responded to a reported burglary in progress at 1346 Maple Hill Road. The victim reported that her ex-boyfriend, James M. File, 46 of 11 Alter Alley Way, Nassau, NY, had broken into her house shortly after she arrived home and confronted her. When the victim tried to use her cell phone to call 911, File grabbed the phone out of her hand and left the residence with it. The victim used her home telephone to call 911. File then left. Officers were on their way to arrest File for this incident when 911 dispatchers received a new call that File was back at the residence. File had a handgun and was menacing the victim with it. A Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriff patrol was nearby and was dispatched to respond as well. The deputy sheriff was in the residence when Schodack Police units arrived. File had relinquished his firearm and surrendered to the deputy sheriff without resistance. File is facing charges of Burglary in the first degree, Burglary in the third degree, Robbery in the third degree, Reckless Endangerment in the first degree, all felonies and Menacing in the second degree and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the fifth degree both misdemeanors. Other criminal charges may be possible. File was arraigned before Town of Schodack Justice Paul Peter and remanded to Rensselaer County Jail without bail. File is scheduled to return to Schodack Town Court for a preliminary hearing on Friday January 12th, 2018 at 1:00pm.

Press release - Structure fire/Hate crime investigation

On Sunday May 14, 2017 at around 11:40 PM, the Town of Schodack Police Department responded to 29 Cold Spring Road for a report of a structure fire. First responders on the scene report that a swastika and a racially offensive epithet had been spray-painted on the front of the detached garage at the residence and that garage was on fire. Fire companies from Nassau, East Schodack, South Schodack, Schodack Valley, and North Chatham responded to the scene to put out the fire. The fire was confined to garage. The Town of Schodack Fire Investigation Unit conducted a cause and origin examination. The Rensselaer County Sheriffs Office K9 unit responded as well. The K9 unit is specially trained for arson investigation. The New York State Police assisted with the investigation on the scene. Police are continuing the investigation of the incident throughout today. Police plan to speak to residents in the area and neighbors of the homeowner. This incident is under investigation as a hate crime. The Town of Schodack Police Department and New York State Police BCI from the Schodack Zone 1 headquarters are investigating an assault, burglary, and robbery that occurred on January 28, 2015 in the early afternoon on Reno Road in the Town of Schodack. The suspect is reported to have been wearing an orange ski mask. The suspect took the victims wallet containing an unknown amount of cash. This investigation is still in the early stages and police are still developing and following up on leads. Press Release Burglary/Criminal Mischief Arrest

On September 25, 2014 The Town of Schodack Police Department arrested George Ertel, Jr, 27 of 429 McClellan Road, Nassau, NY for Burglary 3rd Degree, Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, Petit Larceny, and Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument. Officer Eckel was on patrol when he observed a suspicious vehicle parked partially on the road in front of 864 Maple Hill Road. Officer Eckel discovered Ertel standing on the lawn of the residence with a pile of copper pipe in the front yard and in the the bed of his truck. Further investigation by Officer Eckel revealed that Ertel had forced entry to the residence and removed the copper pipe from inside. Additionally, Ertel was wanted on a bench warrant out of the City of Troy. Ertel was arrested and arraigned before Town of Schodack Justice Peter and remanded to Rensselaer County Jail in lieu of $25,000.00 bail. Ertel is due back in Town of Schodack Justice Court on October 1, 2014 at 5:30 pm for a preliminary hearing.

Press Release - Burglary 2nd and Grand Larceny 4th

On September 9, 2014 The Town of Schodack Police Department arrested Roscoe Quint, 17 of 764 River Road, Schodack Landing, NY for Burglary in the Second Degree, Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th degree, and Petit Larceny related to a residential burglary and several recent larcenies from vehicles in the Schodack Landing area. Officers from the Schodack Police Department were on foot patrol in the area investigating the burglary and rash of larcenies when they encountered Mr. Quint. Mr. Quint had items stolen from vehicles in his possession at the time of his arrest. Officers also recovered stolen property at Mr. Quints home. Mr. Quint was issued an appearance ticket and will appear in Town of Schodack Justice Court on October 1st, 2014 at 6:00pm

The Town of Schodack Police Department conducted a STOP-DWI enforcement detail overnight from August 20, 2013 at 6pm until August 21, 2013 at 2am. Just after midnight, Schodack Police officers arrested David B. Cassidy, 63 of Fort Luaderdale, FL for Felony DWI and Failure to Dim Headlights. Cassidy was arraigned in Town of Schodack Justice Court before Town Justice Bruce J. Wagner and remanded to Rensselaer County Jail in lieu of $2,500.00 bail. Cassidy is scheduled to return to Town Court on September 4, 2013 at 6:00 pm.

Press Release - Hit and Run Driver Arrest

The Town of Schodack Police Department has made an arrest in a personal injury hit-and-run motor vehicle accident which occurred on September 11, 2012.

The accident occurred at around 9:00 pm on a Tuesday night. A 17 year old male and his 14 year old friend were walking on Scott Avenue just east of Village of Castleton when a vehicle struck the 17 year old male. The young man was treated at the scene for injuries to his left hand, buttocks, and pelvic area. The youth's parents later took him to an unspecified hospital for additional treatment. The operator of the vehicle fled the scene.

Investigating officers recovered evidence at the scene of the accident and were able to use that evidence to locate the vehicle.

Arrested was Louis Avellino, 50 of Castleton. He was changed with Reckless Endangerment 2nd degree, Reckless Driving, Assault 3rd degree, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, and imporper lane usage. Avellino was arraigned before Town Justice Peter and released on his own recognizance.
His next court appearance is schedule for October 10th at 6:00 pm.

Press Release - Joseph Scrum Arrest

On Sunday September 9th 2012 at 9:45 PM 19 year old Joseph M. Scrum of Schodack was arrested for:
Dissemination of Indecent material to a minor in the First Degree a Class D Felony
Possessing a Sexual performance by a child less than 16 years of age a Class E Felony
Endangering the welfare of a child a Class A Misdemeanor
Schodack Police received a complaint from the victims parents that reside in Iowa that their 13 year old was exchanging sexual images and text messages with Joseph M. Scrum who is 19 years old. The images and texts were discovered on the childs IPod. Schodack Police and the City of Independence Police of Iowa worked together on the investigation. Joseph Scrum was arrested without incident and arraigned before Nassau Village Judge Conway and released to probation day reporting.

Press Release Larceny Arrests

The Town of Schodack Police Department with assistance from the Town of East Greenbush Police Department arrested three individuals in connection with a string of scrap metal and salvage thefts in town. On August 19, 2011 at around 3:00 am in the Village of Castleton, Detective James Morgan and Officer Richard Eckel noticed the suspect vehicle in the area of the former Fort Orange Paper Company site. This vehicle had been identified in several prior larcenies of scrap metal in various locations within the town. This investigation led to discovery of an active burglary within the Fort Orange Paper Company site. Town of East Greenbush police Sergeant Ernest Tubbs and Officers Christopher Adams and Nicholas Peter of the Town of East Greenbush Police Department responded to assist Schodack officers.
Arrested were:
1) Mark Joseph Soroko age 44 of Rensselaer, NY for Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of stolen property in the 5th degree, and Petit Larceny.

Physical Confrontation / Shooting Press Release

On 9/06/10 at approximately 21:07 date the Schodack Police Department responded to 70 Lake Shore Drive in the Town of Schodack for the report of a shooting with one male victim. Investigation revealed that the homeowner and the victim were involved in a verbal altercation which escalated into a physical confrontation where the homeowner was in legal possession of a handgun with an unrestricted permit to carry a firearm. The weapon then discharged during the struggle and struck the victim in the left knee. Victim was transported to Albany Medical Center by Med Flight for treatment.

Press Release, Arrest of Yu Feng Liu

In a press release on Thursday May 20th 2010 by the Albany County Sheriff's Office:

On May 19, 2010, members of the Albany County Sheriff's Office Drug Interdiction Unit, headed by Inspector John Burke, along with Detective James Morgan of the Town of Schodack Police Department, arrested a Massachusetts female.

Arrested was: Yu Feng Liu, age 45, of 402 Ridge Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts, charged with: Unlawful Practice a Crime, an E Felony, and Prostitution, a B Misdemeanor.

Sheriff's Investigations, posing as a "John", phoned Liu who was advertising her services on Criagslist.

Investigations were told to travel to Exit 10 off I-90 in the Town of Schodack and telephone Liu again. Upon arrival, Investigators telephoned Liu and were told to go to a room in a hotel located just off the exit.

The undercover Investigator went to the room where Liu performed a massage. When the massage was over, Liu did agree to engage in sexual conduct with the Investigator for $80.00 US currency.

Following Liu's arrest, Investigators and Detectives discovered that she was part of an elaborate prostitution ring that crossed several state lines. Liu herself was not the individual answering the phone confirming appointments. The female who answers the phone is located in Boston, MA. The unknown female was accepting appointments for several women in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Yu Feng Liu was arraigned before Town of Schodack Justice Paul Peter and was remanded into the Rensselaer County Jail on $10,000.00 bail.

The investigation will continue into this prostitution ring.
